County Information

Mercer County was organized February 14, 1845, from part of Grundy County. The county seat of Princeton was established in 1847. In 1898 the previous courthouse burned. Some land records were lost and all marriage records at that time were destroyed. The Recorder’s office has land records beginning November 1846. Marriage license beginning August 1898 and a few marriage license applications prior to that date.

Responsibilities

  • Record and maintain Real Estate documents
  • Issue and maintain Marriage Licenses
  • File and maintain State and Federal Tax Liens
  • File and maintain Military Discharge documents

Policies

  • It is office policy not to accept blanket documents.
  • No pictures or scanning of documents by phone or any other means will be allowed, unless the page cannot be copied from book.
  • With all recordings, enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope.
  • Effective July 1, 2001, all Uniform Commercial Code filings are done through the Secretary of State.
  • Tax Liens: Recorder’s Office does not do searches.
  • Birth and Death records: Birth and death records are kept by the State of Missouri, not on the county level. Visit the Missouri Secretary of State for birth and death records.
  • Documents received after 4:00 p.m. will be recorded on the next business day.

If anyone needs a deed prior to June 1, 2016, they can contact the Mercer County Assessor’s office at 660-748-3511 to possibly get a Book number and a Page number. This will take less time for everyone.
